Impossible!
30 years ago, Kirk Gibson did the impossible!
We are proud to commemorate Gibson’s 1988 blast with a shirt for a cause.
On October 15, 1988, one of baseball’s most spectacular home runs happened at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles during Game 1 of the 1988 World Series
Pinch-hitting for the Los Angeles Dodgers with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Kirk Gibson hobbled to the plate, nursing injuries to both legs.
Gibson, who was not expected to play at all because of his injuries, was surprisingly inserted as a pinch-hitter with the Dodgers trailing 4–3 and the tying run at first base.
After an eight-pitch at-bat that lasted almost six minutes, Gibson belted a two-run walk-off home run off the Oakland Athletics’ Dennis Eckersley that won Game 1 for the Dodgers 5–4.
The home run—Gibson’s only plate appearance of the series—helped the Dodgers defeat the A’s 4 games to 1, securing their sixth World Series title.
The play become a legendary moment in baseball history and is regarded as one of the greatest home runs of all-time. Fans voted it as the “Greatest Moment in L.A. Sports History” in a 1995 poll.
Long Ball City is proud to offer our “Impossible” shirt as a tribute to Gibson’s home run. $5 from each “Impossible” shirt will be donated to the Parkinson’s Foundation in honor of Gibson, who now suffers from Parkinson’s Disease.
